Research Description

Dr. Ipp’s laboratory utilizes a multidisciplinary approach that includes clinical phenotyping, biochemical measurement of biomarkers, mathematical modeling, genetics, and health services research methods to study the pathogenesis of diabetes and its complications. His research is focused on the following areas:

(a) Diabetic complications, with an emphasis on diabetic retinopathy. The work on diabetic eye disease focuses on prevention of blindness. Firstly, by investigating new pathogenetic pathways that may lead to retinal disease. Secondly, by designing improved methods to improve practical implementation of periodic eye screening to prevent vision loss.
(b) The role of the pancreatic beta cell in the development and progression of diabetes. This research includes clinical studies of prediabetes and diabetes.
