Biography

Dr. Kam Kalantar-Zadeh is a board-certified/recertified nephrologist, internist, and pediatrician, a trialist, and a clinical investigator with broad expertise in research in chronic kidney disease (CKD). As the former University of California Irvine (UCI) Nephrology Chief, current Harbor-UCLA Nephrology Chief and Dept. Medicine Vice Chair, and Los Angeles County Dept of Health Services (DHS) Kidney Health workgroup Chair, one of his major objectives has been to examine effective approaches to reduce disparities in CKD via rigorous clinical and translational research.

The proposed research “Empowering Patients to Engage Social Networks in Living Donor Kidney Transplantation Using Telemedicine: A Mixed Methods Study” is a significant and timely line of research. He has established expertise in kidney disease and transplant research including population health projects, clinical trials, and mixed methods studies as reflected by my track record publication and NIH and VA funding, including USRDS U01 award, K24 mentoring award, K44 SBIR, T35 medical student summer award, and several past and current R01 and R21 grants and VA Merit Awards as well as VA, NIH and AHRQ Study section appointed memberships and chairing, along with leadership positions, including councilmanship and presidencies of multiple national and international professional societies, and positions of associate editors and editor-in-chief of recognized peer-reviewed journals.

Dr. Kalantar-Zadeh has also had long-standing track record of collaboration on multiple Federally funded projects. This experience, coupled with his extensive networking across multiple sectors, including CKD communities, ESRD network organization serving as the current president of their national forum, and VA and CMS panels, will allow him to harness the needed resources and expertise to support the proposed multiple-PI study.
