About Us

The Lundquist Institute for Biomedical Innovation at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center (TLI) is a leading nonprofit research organization in the life sciences ecosystem of Los Angeles County. In 1952, Harbor-UCLA doctors founded TLI driven by the need to solve the most challenging medical problems confronting their patients and bring those innovations back to those patients as quickly as possible. This bedside to bench to bedside approach is still the core of who we are and what differentiates us.

Today, our team includes 150 principal investigators and 400 research support personnel actively engaged in over 600 basic and clinical science studies and more than 100 clinical trials that benefit our patients here.  Affiliated with UCLA’s David Geffen School of Medicine and partnered with Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, our investigators consistently make breakthroughs that change how we prevent, detect, and treat disease.

Fueling Innovation and Medical Breakthroughs

TLI’s community health programs benefit families across Los Angeles by supporting over 100,000 underserved women and children each year, improving maternal and child health and focusing on nutrition and preventative care.

With a focus on cutting-edge translational research, TLI is committed to fostering the next generation of scientific leaders through robust education and training programs.

The Lundquist Institute also plays a key role in promoting technology transfer and commercialization, accelerating the transition of our laboratory breakthroughs into real-world solutions.

Our Mission

The Lundquist Institute unites scientific excellence, entrepreneurial innovation, and authentic partnership – with patients, communities, and industry – to translate discovery into real-world health impact locally and globally.

Our Vision

The Lundquist Institute aspires to lead in biomedical research by translating patient- and community-inspired innovations into real-world health solutions, locally and globally.

Then and Now

Founded in 1952 on the campus of Harbor General Hospital, The Lundquist Institute – formerly known as Harbor-UCLA Research and Education Institute (REI) and Los Angeles Biomedical Research Institute (LA BioMed) – began with humble structures, including former U.S. Army wards and barracks. Despite these primitive facilities, groundbreaking research was achieved until the first dedicated research building opened in 1987.

Since then, five additional state-of-the-art research centers have been constructed, culminating in the establishment of the Medical Research Laboratory in 2019. Equipped with cutting-edge facilities, the “BioLabs at The Lundquist Institute” incubator, extensive laboratory infrastructure, and a forthcoming 15-acre BioCenter tech park, TLI has become a vital hub for the growing biotech industry in Los Angeles.
