Research Areas

Research

Dr. Jendzjowsky’s laboratory is part of a collaborative effort investigating how the sensory neurons form a part of the immune landscape to sense pathogenic infiltration and influence the immune system to mitigate disease. His multidisciplinary research program incorporates immunology, neuroscience and respiratory physiology, investigating bacterial infection (pneumonia) and allergic (asthma) diseases in the lung. The lung is tasked to be the organ where oxygen is taken into the body and bloodstream.

However, this unique ability renders this organ susceptible to pathogenic infiltration and allergic disease. The focus on pulmonary bacterial pathogenic infiltration is of the utmost importance, given the increasing strains of multi-drug resistant bacteria. In the same vein, asthma is ever-increasing in children causing a severe impact on the quality of life. The Jendzjowsky Laboratory takes an innovative approach to investigate neural reflexes and how they form a first line of defence alongside the immune system to mitigate harmful pathogens and allergens to improve health outcomes.

Biography

Dr. Nicholas Jendzjowsky studied at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, where he eared his doctorate degree in autonomic vascular regulation, a master’s degree in cardiovascular physiology, and a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology. Following his PhD, Dr. Jendzjowsky completed a postdoctoral fellowship in respiratory neurobiology at the University of Calgary in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
