Dr. Macias Gil’s research bridges clinical care and public health by centering culturally responsive, community-informed approaches to HIV and STI prevention. He investigates the intersection of systemic inequities, structural barriers, and social determinants of health to better understand and address the factors that drive disproportionate infection rates in marginalized populations.
Biography
Dr. Raul Macias Gil’s work focuses on addressing healthcare disparities affecting LGBTQIA+ individuals, with a particular emphasis on Hispanic/Latinx and other communities of color who are at increased risk for HIV and sexually transmitted infections (STIs). He serves as Chair of the LGBTQIA+ Interest Group for the Infectious Diseases Society of America (IDSA) and co-leads the Department of Medicine’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Committee at Harbor-UCLA.
Through his combined roles in clinical care, education, and community engagement, he seeks to develop effective, equitable interventions that are informed by the lived experiences of marginalized communities. His work ultimately aims to close persistent gaps in healthcare and promote equity in infectious disease prevention and treatment.
