The Lundquist Institute (TLI) is pleased to welcome Mathias Schmidt, PD, PhD, to its Board of Directors. A life sciences leader with over 25 years of experience in biopharma, Schmidt has dedicated his career to advancing therapies that improve the lives of patients, particularly in rare and pediatric diseases.
Mathias Schmidt currently serves as Chief Executive Officer of ArmaGen, Inc., and as Executive Fellow and Advisor to the Chairman of JCR Pharmaceuticals, Ltd. Over the course of his career, he has led companies through financing rounds, mergers, and international expansion, while keeping patients and outcomes at the center of his work.
At ArmaGen, Schmidt helped advance a blood-brain-barrier platform and guided the first phase II clinical trial of a brain-penetrant therapy for children with severe MPS I. He later expanded JCR’s global rare-disease portfolio and built lasting collaborations across the biopharma ecosystem. Earlier in his career, he held leadership roles at ASTA Medica, Altana, Nycomed, and Takeda California, and trained at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.
“I’m inspired to join TLI because of its unwavering commitment to turning research into real hope for patients,” said Mathias Schmidt, PD, PhD. “Throughout my career, I’ve seen how science paired with compassion can change lives, and I look forward to supporting that mission at The Lundquist Institute.”
Mathias Schmidt has authored nearly 50 peer-reviewed publications, holds multiple patents, and maintains strong ties with patient groups, academia, and the venture community. He first connected with TLI through Dr. Lynda Polgreen, whose work in rare disease resonated with his own focus on patient-driven science.
“Mathias Schmidt brings both deep scientific expertise and a clear patient-first perspective,” said Joe W. Ramos, PhD, President and CEO of The Lundquist Institute. “We are thrilled to have him on the Board and know his leadership will strengthen our efforts to bring innovative therapies to those who need them most.”
We are proud to welcome Mathias Schmidt to the TLI Board of Directors and look forward to the impact his insight and experience will bring to our community.
