Dr. Kopple’s research has focused on protein and amino acid metabolism in health and disease, the nutritional and metabolic disorders and treatment of acute and chronic kidney disease and kidney failure.

Biography

Joel D. Kopple, MD was Chief of Nephrology and Hypertension at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center for 25 years. He has published research on protein, amino acid, energy, vitamin and mineral metabolism in kidney disease and kidney failure, the dietary requirements for protein, energy, and many minerals and vitamins in these conditions, skeletal muscle metabolism and physical exercise training. He has authored or coauthored over 600 papers and chapters, edited many symposia, and is an editor of the first four editions of Nutritional Management of Renal Disease.

Dr. Kopple co-founded the International Society of Renal Nutrition and Metabolism (ISRNM), International Federation of Kidney Foundations (IFKF), and World Kidney Day, and was president of the National Kidney Foundation (NKF), American Society of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition, ISRNM, IFKF, and Council of American Kidney Societies.

His many awards include the David M. Hume Memorial Award (NKF), Robert H. Herman Memorial and E.V. McCollum Awards (American Society for Nutrition), Belding Scribner Award (American Society of Nephrology), Pasteur Award (University of Strasbourg), Thomas Addis Medal (ISRNM), Malpighi Medal (University of Messina) and Koranyi Award (Hungarian Society of Nephrology). He has received three honorary doctorate degrees. The NKF Council on Renal Nutrition designated the ‘Joel D Kopple Award ‘ in Renal Nutrition. The IFKF created a separate ‘Joel D. Kopple Award’.
