Research

Dr. Sakai-Bizmark conducts health services research using large administrative databases. Her work focuses on two interrelated areas: 

  1. Health Management in Underserved Populations: 
    She investigates strategies to improve the management of physical and mental health conditions among vulnerable populations, including individuals experiencing homelessness and Deaf or hard of hearing individuals. Her recent research emphasizes maternal, infant, and child health in these groups. 
  1. Evaluation of Health Policies and Interventions: 
    She assesses the effectiveness and impact of various health interventions, screenings, and regionalization policies to inform healthcare decision-making. Her prior work includes studies in pediatric cardiology, asthma, and diabetes mellitus. 
Biography

Dr. Rie Sakai-Bizmark received her MD (2000) and PhD (2008) from Juntendo University School of Medicine in Japan. She earned an MPH from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in 2010, where she also completed her postdoctoral training in health services research. 

Her research on anaphylactic asthma among youth experiencing homelessness received the 2019 HCUP Outstanding Article of the Year Award, sponsored by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) and AcademyHealth.
