Research
Dr. Chong’s research background includes mixed methods, gained from UC Berkeley School of Public Health/Joint Medical Program where he earned a master’s degree, and his experience as a Youth Violence Prevention Graduate Fellow at the Institute of the Study of Social Change in Berkeley, California. The focus of his graduate research was the association between violence and manhood for young Southeast Asian men in Oakland, California.
As a community-engaged academic surgeon, Dr. Chong has an interest in developing and maintaining processes through which surgical trainees can implement trauma-informed care practices for our vulnerable populations, as well as engaging structural vulnerability in patient-centered care.
Biography
As a trauma surgeon who has worked and trained predominantly at urban, safety net hospitals, Dr. Vince Chong has dedicated his career to the care of diverse communities that face many social, cultural, and structural barriers to healthy living. He has experience in cross-disciplinary research, advocacy, and program development to address social and structural determinants of health.
Dr. Chong has also held a leadership position in Harbor-UCLA Medical Center’s Safe Harbor Trauma Recovery Center, a hospital-based violence intervention program and trauma recovery center. Safe Harbor focuses on transitioning its services to long-term, intensive case management and strengthening relationships with the community. In total, this work informs Dr. Chong’s development of a theory of practice for community-engaged trauma surgeons through a social justice lens.
