Our Mission
The Lundquist Institute translates scientific discoveries into innovations that enhance human health, benefiting our community and the world.
Our Vision
To lead in biomedical innovation that affirms every person, amplifies every discovery, and accelerates the path to cures.
The TLI Difference
As an independent nonprofit biomedical research institute affiliated with the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and partnered with Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, The Lundquist Institute is uniquely positioned to connect scientific discoveries, clinical insight, innovation, and community impact to accelerate solutions that improve human health.
Clinical Insight Meets Scientific Discovery
Our partnership with Harbor-UCLA helps researchers identify real-world health challenges and opportunities, accelerating the development of solutions that matter most to patients and communities.
Pathways to Translational Impact
Our investigators advance discoveries from the laboratory to clinical studies, commercialization pathways, and ultimately the people and communities they are intended to serve.
Accelerating Innovation
From technology transfer and startup formation to an on-site incubator and industry partnerships, we help move promising discoveries toward real-world application.
Collaboration Across Disciplines
Our Innovation Hub model connects expertise across disciplines, accelerating team science and the development of solutions to complex health challenges.
Community-Centered Impact
Research, education, and community engagement work together to improve health outcomes locally while informing solutions with global relevance.
Our Ecosystem
The Lundquist Institute advances its mission through four interconnected areas of impact.
Research
Advancing discovery through four Innovation Hubs.
Innovation
Transforming discoveries into therapies, technologies, and companies.
Education
Training the next generation of scientific and healthcare leaders.
Community
Improving health through engagement, outreach, and partnership.
Strategic Plan
As The Lundquist Institute looks toward its next chapter, our strategic plan provides a roadmap to strengthen scientific excellence, accelerate innovation, expand partnerships, deepen community impact, and build the organizational capabilities needed to advance our mission and expand our impact for decades to come.
Then and Now
Founded in 1952 on the campus of Harbor General Hospital, The Lundquist Institute – formerly known as Harbor-UCLA Research and Education Institute (REI) and Los Angeles Biomedical Research Institute (LA BioMed) – began with humble structures, including former U.S. Army wards and barracks. Despite these primitive facilities, groundbreaking research was achieved until the first dedicated research building opened in 1987.
Since then, five additional state-of-the-art research centers have been constructed, culminating in the establishment of the Medical Research Laboratory in 2019. Equipped with cutting-edge facilities, the “BioLabs at The Lundquist Institute” incubator, extensive laboratory infrastructure, and a forthcoming 15-acre BioCenter tech park, TLI has become a vital hub for the growing biotech industry in Los Angeles.
