Our Focus
The Systems Medicine and Precision Prevention Innovation Hub advances research that addresses the whole person—not just a single disease, organ, or specialty. By connecting basic science, clinical research, and patient care, we focus on improving the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of complex chronic conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, kidney disease, and pulmonary disorders. Our work spans the full research continuum, from understanding disease mechanisms in the laboratory to conducting clinical trials, quality improvement initiatives, and population-level studies. This integrated approach helps our investigators uncover how health conditions interact and translate those insights into more coordinated, personalized, and effective care.

Why This Hub Exists
Many of today’s most pressing health challenges cross traditional medical specialties, yet research and patient care often remain divided into separate disciplines. Laboratory scientists may lack access to clinical perspectives, while physicians with important research questions may need collaborators, mentorship, funding guidance, or technical support to pursue them. Our hub exists to break down these barriers. By creating stronger connections among scientists, clinicians, statisticians, and research teams, we make it easier to develop meaningful studies, accelerate discoveries, and apply research findings to real patient needs. Ultimately, we seek to ensure that research does more than generate knowledge—it should help people live healthier lives, prevent disease progression, and navigate their care more easily.

What We Do
Investigate How Chronic Diseases Interact
We study the biological, clinical, and environmental factors that connect conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, kidney disease, and pulmonary disorders. By examining how these conditions develop and influence one another, our investigators work to identify shared disease mechanisms and new opportunities for prevention and treatment.
Conduct Research Across the Discovery Continuum
We carry out research at every stage—from laboratory studies of cells and disease pathways to clinical research, clinical trials, quality improvement projects, and population-level studies. This allows scientific questions to be examined from multiple perspectives and translated into findings that are relevant to patient care.
Develop More Precise Approaches to Prevention and Care
We use research findings to explore earlier screening methods, identify risk factors, evaluate targeted treatments, and design studies that reflect the complex needs of patients with multiple health conditions. We aim to help prevent disease progression and support more personalized, coordinated care.
Build and Support Collaborative Research Projects
We connect clinicians, laboratory scientists, biostatisticians, and other experts to develop research questions, design studies, analyze data, pursue funding, and move promising projects forward. We also mentor early-career investigators and help them establish the skills, partnerships, and research programs needed to succeed.
