Pulmonary hypertension and sickle cell disease vaso-occlusion
Research DescriptionDr. Ibe’s research intents to understand the role of inflammatory and anti-inflammatory proteins in pulmonary vascular injury. His work includes investigations into the role of NF-kB, intracellular kinases and retinoblastoma protein in the regulation of platelet activating factor receptor gene and protein expression. Dr. Ibe employs in vivo small, medium and large animal models and in vitro cell culture models to investigate perinatal pulmonary adaptation and the role of platelet activating factor in the pathology of persistent pulmonary hypertension of the newborn.
Dr. Ibe also studies the role of these lipid mediators in cardiovascular and pulmonary abnormalities of sickle cell disease. His sickle cell disease studies are primarily focused on understanding the consequences of abnormal erythrocyte-endothelium interaction in the pathogenesis of vaso-occlusion and pulmonary hypertension in sickle cell disease.
