A CFO’s Vision for Sustainable Scientific Growth

As Chief Financial Officer of The Lundquist Institute, I believe financial stewardship is ultimately about creating possibility. It is about ensuring that every dollar entrusted to us becomes an investment in discovery, every partnership expands our capacity to serve, and every decision we make today strengthens our ability to improve lives tomorrow.

For decades, The Lundquist Institute has earned a reputation for scientific excellence by securing highly competitive research funding. That legacy is one of our greatest strengths, and it reflects the extraordinary work of our investigators and research teams. At the same time, today’s research environment reminds us that even the strongest institutions must continue to evolve. Government funding will always remain essential, but lasting impact requires a broader and more resilient foundation.

My vision is to help build that financial foundation.

Financial resilience is not simply about protecting the organization during times of uncertainty. It is about creating the ability to pursue bold ideas, respond to emerging opportunities, and support promising research wherever it has the greatest potential to improve human health. By diversifying the ways we support our mission, we strengthen our ability to advance discovery not only today, but for generations to come.

That means expanding philanthropy, accelerating technology transfer, growing clinical research partnerships, developing sustainable sources of earned revenue, and cultivating deeper collaborations with industry, government, and community organizations. Together, these efforts create more than financial stability. They create momentum. They help transform promising discoveries into real treatments and bring innovative care to the patients and communities who need it most.

One of the opportunities I find most inspiring is building a broader community of support around scientific discovery. There are many meaningful ways to contribute to this mission. Some may choose to invest as donors, while others may contribute as investors, advocates, research partners, affiliates, or collaborators who bring expertise, resources, and connections that help advance innovation. Each contribution plays an important role in strengthening the ecosystem that allows discovery to flourish.

Turning scientific breakthroughs into treatments that improve lives requires collaboration across many sectors. Industry partners, in particular, bring valuable expertise, infrastructure, and experience that help translate promising research into solutions that reach patients. When researchers, clinicians, entrepreneurs, donors, investors, companies, and community leaders come together with a shared sense of purpose, innovation moves faster and its impact reaches farther.

Ultimately, I believe our greatest opportunity is not simply to grow The Lundquist Institute. It is to help cultivate a thriving life sciences ecosystem where collaboration fuels discovery and every partnership creates new possibilities. An ecosystem where scientific curiosity meets entrepreneurial thinking, where public and private organizations work together to solve complex health challenges, and where every breakthrough has a clearer path to improving lives.

Growth, in itself, is never the goal. Impact is.

Success will be measured by discoveries that reach patients sooner, by partnerships that multiply our collective strengths, by opportunities created for the next generation of scientists, and by healthier communities that benefit from advances made here.

If that vision resonates with you, I invite you to connect with me, visit our campus, and begin a conversation with us. The greatest advances in medicine have never been achieved by individuals working alone. They are built by communities of people and organizations willing to share their ideas, expertise, resources, and commitment to something greater than themselves.

Together, we can build an Institute that not only advances science, but also expands hope, transforms lives, and creates opportunities that will benefit generations to come.
