Dr. Gausche-Hill is Professor of Clinical Emergency Medicine and Pediatrics at the David Geffen School of Medicine and is the immediate past Medical Director for the Los Angeles County Emergency Medical Services Agency. She is the interim Chief Executive Officer for The Lundquist Institute for Biomedical Innovation at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center where she serves in the Department of Emergency Medicine as research faculty. She is nationally and internationally known for her work as an EMS researcher and educator, and for her leadership in the field of EMS and pediatric emergency medicine. She has won numerous national awards for her leadership in emergency medicine, pediatric emergency medicine and EMS. She is best known for her study of pre-hospital airway management for children published in JAMA 2000 and her work on the National Pediatric Readiness Project published in JAMA Pediatrics in 2015 and JAMA Network Open in 2021. She served on the Pediatric and Main committees for the National Academy of Medicine’s Future of Emergency Care in the United States Health System. She is a Senior Director for the American Board of Emergency Medicine, and a senior editor for the textbook, Rosen’s Emergency Medicine: Concepts and Clinical Practice.

Research Description
Her scholarly work has included more than 300 peer-reviewed publications, textbook chapters, reviews and abstracts including several landmark publications on prehospital airway management and readiness of emergency departments to care for children. She serves as a Co-PI for the Southern California Strategies to Innovate EmeRgENcy Care Clinical Trials Network (SoCal SIREN) and as Senior Consultant for the HRSA funded EMS for Children Innovation and Improvement Center. She serves as Co-I for federally funded grants including as site EMS investigator for the NINDS funded Pediatric Dose Optimization for Seizures by EMS (PediDose) study, and as a core co-investigator for the NHLBI funded Pediatric Prehospital Airway Resuscitation (Pedi-PART) clinical trial.Dr. Gausche-Hill has received many acknowledgements for creating innovative educational programs and for leadership in emergency medicine, pediatric emergency medicine and EMS including the following: In 2004, the National Education Award in Emergency Medicine by the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP), in 2005 the Martha Bushore-Fallis APLS award from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), in 2007 the “Emergency Medical Services for Children Heroes Award for Lifetime Achievement” by the Health Resources and Services Administration, The Federal EMS for Children Program, in 2008 the “Heroes of Emergency Medicine” by ACEP, in 2012 the Steve Miller Education and Mentorship Award by the AAP, in 2013 Woman of the Year by the National Association of Professional Women, and the Distinguished Service in EMS Medal by the State of California, in 2014 the Outstanding Contribution in EMS award as well as the Speaker of the Year Award by ACEP, in 2016 the PEMSOFT/EBSCO Award by ACEP for building the evidence base in pediatric emergency medicine, in 2018 the Faculty Teaching Award named in her honor by the Society of Academic Emergency Medicine Pediatric Interest Group, in 2019 the James S. Seidel Award for Life Time Achievement by the AAP and Emergency Medical Services Medical Director of the Year by the State of California EMS Authority. In 2021 she was named a Legend of the Lundquist Institute at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, in 2022 was given the Hal Jayne Education Award by the Society of Academic Emergency Medicine, and in 2023 was the only physician to be awarded the Vanguard Award by the American Ambulance Association for more than 35 years of dedication to EMS.
