Dr. Jerome I. Rotter, Executive Data Science Officer at The Lundquist Institute, has been recognized by Research.com as one of the world’s leading geneticists, earning designation as a 2026 Leader in Genetics and ranking No. 18 in the United States and No. 26 worldwide.
The annual Research.com rankings recognize scientists whose careers have demonstrated exceptional scientific impact through influential research, highly cited publications, and lasting contributions to their fields.
For more than four decades, Dr. Rotter has helped shape the field of human genetics through pioneering discoveries that have advanced understanding of the inherited causes of common diseases. His work has laid important groundwork for today’s precision medicine approaches, enabling researchers to better predict disease risk and develop more personalized strategies for prevention and treatment.
Throughout his career, Dr. Rotter has authored more than 1,200 peer-reviewed scientific publications, including more than 800 peer-reviewed publications since joining The Lundquist Institute in 2013. His work has appeared in many of the world’s most influential scientific journals—including The New England Journal of Medicine, JAMA, Nature, Science, The Lancet, and Cell—and has helped shape modern understanding of human genetics and complex disease.
I am honored to receive this recognition, which reflects the collaborative efforts of outstanding colleagues, trainees, and research partners over many years. Genetics has transformed our understanding of human disease, and as it increasingly converges with data science and artificial intelligence, we have an unprecedented opportunity to accelerate discovery and bring more personalized approaches to prevention and treatment for patients around the world.

Dr. Rotter emphasized that this recognition reflects the contributions of many Lundquist investigators, including Kent D. Taylor, PhD; Xiuqing Guo, PhD; Yii Der Ida Chen, PhD; Henry J. Lin, MD; Xiaohui Li, MD, MS; Peter Liu, MD, PhD; and Adrian Au, MD, PhD, whose collaborative research continues to advance the understanding of genetics, genomics, and precision medicine.
Earlier this year, Dr. Rotter was appointed Executive Data Science Officer for The Lundquist Institute. In this role, he is leading efforts to build the infrastructure and capabilities needed to integrate data science, artificial intelligence, genomics, and advanced analytics, helping accelerate translational research and advance precision medicine across the research enterprise.
Dr. Rotter also serves as Director of the newly established Center for Translational Genomics, one of The Lundquist Institute’s scientific centers created through its new organizational structure. This Center builds upon the longstanding work of the former Institute for Translational Genomics, which Dr. Rotter previously directed, and continues its mission to advance understanding of the genetic basis of disease and to translate discoveries into new approaches for prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. The Center for Translational Genomics serves as a cornerstone of The Lundquist Institute’s strategy to accelerate precision medicine by bringing together experts in genetics, genomics, data science, and clinical research.
“Dr. Rotter exemplifies the kind of scientific leadership that defines The Lundquist Institute,” said Joe W. Ramos, PhD, President and CEO of TLI. “His research continues to transform our understanding of how genetic factors influences human health and disease, while his leadership is helping build the data science capabilities that will drive the next generation of biomedical discovery.”
Dr. Rotter’s recognition highlights both his remarkable scientific career and The Lundquist Institute’s commitment to advancing biomedical innovation through genetics, data science, and precision medicine.
