LA BioMed Researcher Ranked Top Expert On End-stage Renal Disease – Expertscape Selects Dr. Kamyar Kalantar-Zadeh

Expertscape, a service to help patients find the experts they need to consult on specific medical conditions, recently named Kamyar Kalantar-Zadeh, MD, MPH, PhD, a Los Angeles Biomedical Research Institute (LA BioMed) lead researcher, the world’s No. 1 expert on end-stage kidney, or renal, disease.

Dr. Kalantar emerged as the organization’s No. 1 physician-researcher in the field of end-stage renal disease, when the kidneys function at below 10 to 15 percent of their normal capacity. At this point, a person’s kidneys can no longer effectively perform their jobs, which include removing waste and excess fluid from the blood, so dialysis or a kidney transplant is needed.

Dr. Kalantar-Zadeh studied medicine at the Universities of Bonn and Nuremberg in Germany and also obtained a master of public health (MPH) degree and a PhD degree in epidemiology from the University of California, Berkeley. His post-graduate training included a medicine/pediatrics residency at State University New York’s Brooklyn program and a nephrology fellowship at the University of California, San Francisco.

From 2000-2012, Dr. Kalantar served as a faculty nephrologist at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center and was appointed as professor of medicine, pediatrics and epidemiology at the UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine and Fielding School of Public Health.

Since 2012, Dr. Kalantar has served as the chief of the Division of Nephrology and Hypertension at the University of California, Irvine, where he oversees educational programs at UC Irvine Medical Center and Long Beach Veterans Administration Medical Center. He continued his UCLA affiliation as an adjunct professor of epidemiology at UCLA Fielding’s School of Medicine and has maintained an active research center at LA Biomed with staff members and investigators who are engaged in several National Institutes of Health and industry projects.

Dr. Kalantar is board-certified in internal medicine, pediatrics and nephrology. In addition to Expertscape, he has been listed in several prestigious directories, including America’s Top Physicians and America’s Top Doctors.
