Surgery: A Case Based Clinical Review
LA BioMed Researcher Authors Book to Provide Instruction for Medical Students
LOS ANGELES – (Jan. 13, 2015) – “Surgery: A Case Based Clinical Review,” a new book by Christian de Virgilio, MD, a nine-time winner of UCLA’s Golden Apple Award as Faculty Teacher of the Year, provides medical students and other healthcare professionals with a comprehensive understanding of surgical diseases in one easy-to-use reference.
Scheduled for release Feb. 14, the book presents about 50 of the most common surgical cases and takes readers through the process of diagnosing, treating and managing the cases.
Each case presentation is followed by a series of short questions and answers, which are designed to provide further understanding of the important aspects of the history, physical examination, differential diagnosis, diagnostic work-up and management, as well as questions that may arise on surgical rounds. The book also discusses areas of controversy in the diagnosis or management of each disease presented and the pitfalls to avoid.
“The book is designed to help medical students during their surgical rotations because there is a real void in books that provide this in-depth information in an easy-to-use format,” said Dr. de Virgilio, a Los Angeles Biomedical Research Institute (LA BioMed) lead investigator. “It is also designed for students studying to be nurses, physicians’ assistants and nursing practitioners.”
“Surgery: A Case Based Clinical Review” is based on Dr. de Virgilio’s more than 20 years of Socratic medical student teaching experience as a professor of surgery at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. He also serves as the interim chair for the Department of Surgery and director of the General Surgery Residency Program at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center.
A dedicated teacher, in addition to winning UCLA’s Golden Apple Award nine times, he received the 2007 National Golden Apple for Teaching Excellence Award from the American Medical Student Association (AMSA). AMSA presents the National Golden Apple Award annually to honor the contributions of a medical school professor who has made a significant impact on the educational value that medical students receive from their coursework.
Dr. de Virgilio’s research has also focused on surgical education and surgical procedures. He has authored 122 research publications and seven book chapters.
Also contributing to “Surgery: A Case Based Clinical Review” were medical interns Areg Grigorian the associate editor, and Paul N. Frank, the assistant editor. The book is published by Springer.
